Preppy Up North
A
preppy Detroiter summers in the northern mitten, locally referred to as Up
North. There are two main traditional concentrations for the preppy Detroiter
to summer, Charlevoix area and Mackinac Island. These two regions are steep in
French and British colonial history as important locations for controlling the
Great Lakes fur trade.
Charlevoix
Charlevoix became the summer home for the preppy over a century ago. The area was admired for its charming bay and coastal New England vibes. And with most things preppy, the preppy could embrace the region's long colonial tradition. The town is small and relaxing, making it a great location to get away from the bustle of city life. Sailing and rowing on Lake Charlevoix are popular sport and must be taken up upon arrival.
Harbor Springs
Harbor Springs has many quaint admirable waterfront homes and a splendid little town. The preppy enjoys this Charlevoix region for its many activities. And if Harbor Springs is not enough, crafty Petoskey is per usual a stomping ground for preppy Detroiter.
Mackinac Island
Few places on earth can be preppier than Mackinac Island. The island with a long history of European colonization, feels like it has been left in the past with having a car ban on the entire island. Yes, you will witness carriages pulled by horses on the ancient streets of Mackinac.
The grand imposing British built Fort Mackinac will greet you upon your ferry arrival from the mainland. The authority of the large fort shall ensure you enjoy your time on the island in great civility. The majestic British built fort has a long history from the American Revolution to the War of 1812. Today, the preppy can step back into militaristic splendor with live cannon fire and the discipline of soldier reenactments. The Tea Room Restaurant is a preppy must with views over the harbor and lake.
The Grand Hotel has been a place of entertainment for multiple United States presidents and generations of preppies. A Grand Hotel horse drawn carriage picks you up at the docks and slowly whisks you back into Victorian Michigan. The hotel is a preppy goldmine inside and out. One cannot explain the beauty of this hotel and it must be on any respectable to visit list. The preppy Detroiter thinks of no better place to summer than at the Grand Hotel. As one can expect with its name you shall have a grand experience keeping the best of company while summering Up North.
Northern Michigan is lovely.
